Now that the weather is nasty outside it’s time to think of carving again Christmas has come and gone and you might find yourself with some free time so think about finding a new project in trying out all the new tools that you received for Christmas.
I personally have been thinking of carving small-scale paddles for decorations and home I been searching for many patterns that I think would suit a smaller paddle. When scaling down a project you must remember you need space to do the carving in the proper tools for that smaller space.

Always remember that you can create your carving templates by pencil scan them into your computer and print them with a laser printer. Then you can take a hot iron and iron them onto a flat wooden surface for your carving pattern. This can work well for anyone that wants to transfer a pattern to a flat surface. I might add that I over did it one year, and I had to remove a lot of black ink for my carving. So be careful with the thickness of your lines when you’re drawing your pattern

Have a happy and safe new year and have fun

Utilizing small power carving tools

Utilizing small power carving tools

Wood Carving with hand tools work well for me. I personally prefer hand tools over mallet tools, but whenever I carve a larger carvings I do prefer mallet tools, But saying this I must say that in the last several years with arthritis that has developed in my hands and fingers, I have added the use of a power tool for smoothing and finishing the carvings.
Power tools can be a great benefit when I am finishing larger projects. They work well for sanding smoothing and removing any pencil marks that I have left on the carving. I personally use the power tool the most when my wood carving is basically finished and I want to put a finishing touch on the wood carving before adding a finish to the wood
Many of the inexpensive power tools used for carving can be purchased at any hardware department and have a variety of attachments and tips available. But if you want a power tool that is devoted only for wood carving. I would search the Internet to get the best deal and see the variety of the tools available.

Carving indoors

If you're ready to carve with that knew Christmas present a set of carving tools and the weather is really bad outside you can carve indoors. Carving indoors can create a problem with lighting, if you're getting older and carving indoors can create quite a mess. If you have a wooden floor, you can sweep the floor and there is no reason you cannot carve indoors and have an easy cleanup.
I do not use my big holding device on my large tool stand. I use a small worktable that I purchased on sale for $15. It folds up and is light weight and easy to maneuver. It's great for him carving, but I'm not sure I would use it with mallet tools.
Keep a broom and dust pan handy and you can contain most of your mess.
